Protonephridia are the simple excretory tubule systems in flatworms (Platyhelminthes). They consist of flame cells capping blind-ended tubules that merge into larger canals opening to the surface via nephridiopores.

Ammonotelic organisms excrete nitrogen primarily as ammonia — mostly aquatic animals (fish, aquatic invertebrates) where large volumes of water are available to dilute and wash away the toxic ammonia immediately.

Hydrophytes are plants that grow in water or waterlogged soils. They have adaptations for aquatic life: aerenchyma (air spaces for buoyancy and gas exchange), reduced root systems, and thin cuticle. Examples include water lilies and lotus.

Xerophytes (from Greek: xeros = dry) are plants that have evolved to survive in habitats with very limited water supply, such as deserts, steppes, and Mediterranean scrubland. Examples include cacti, succulents, and desert shrubs.

Excretion is the removal from the body of metabolic waste products — primarily nitrogenous wastes (urea, uric acid, ammonia) from protein catabolism, as well as CO₂ from respiration. It is distinct from egestion (removal of undigested food).

Dehydration refers to the loss of water from the body in excess of intake through evaporation, sweating, urine, and breathing. In plants, excessive water loss by transpiration is called desiccation.

The urea cycle (ornithine cycle) is a cyclic metabolic pathway in the liver that converts toxic ammonia (from amino acid deamination) into less toxic urea, which is then excreted by the kidneys in urine.

Of the approximately 180 litres of water filtered by the glomeruli daily, only 1-1.5 litres is excreted as urine. About 99% of filtered water is reabsorbed by the renal tubules and collecting ducts.

The proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) is the twisted/coiled portion of the nephron immediately after the Bowman's capsule. It reabsorbs about 65-70% of filtered water, all glucose, amino acids, and most ions.

Ureters are muscular tubes (25-30 cm) that carry urine from the renal pelvis of each kidney to the urinary bladder. Peristaltic contractions in the ureter wall propel urine downward.

The kidneys are retroperitoneal organs — located against the dorsal (posterior) body wall behind the peritoneum. The right kidney is slightly lower than the left due to the position of the liver above it.

Collecting ducts from nephrons drain into a branched system of calyces (minor → major calyces) in the renal pelvis. Urine collects here before flowing down the ureter to the bladder.

Malpighian tubules in insects are blind-ended tubes that project into the haemocoel (blood cavity). They absorb waste products (uric acid, K⁺) from the haemolymph and empty into the hindgut for water reabsorption.

Earthworm metanephridia are highly coiled tubules arranged in pairs in each body segment. They collect coelomic fluid via a ciliated nephrostome, reabsorb useful substances, and expel urine through nephridiopores.

Kidneys are the principal excretory organs in most multicellular animals. They filter blood, produce urine containing nitrogenous wastes, and regulate water and electrolyte balance to maintain homeostasis.

Earthworm's excretory organs are metanephridia — more advanced than protonephridia. Each segment has a pair of metanephridia that collect waste from the coelomic fluid via a nephrostome and expel it through a nephridiopore.

Protonephridia (with flame cells) are the simplest type of excretory organs found in flatworms and some annelids. They are simple tubules with a flame cell at one end and a nephridiopore (external opening) at the other.

Flame cells are the blind, ciliated terminal cells of the protonephridial tubules in Planaria. The beating cilia create a current drawing waste fluid into the tubules, resembling a flickering flame — hence the name.

Contractile vacuoles in freshwater protists (like Paramecium and Amoeba) regulate water content by collecting excess water that enters by osmosis and periodically contracting to expel it outside the cell.
